Essentials for Schools

Tennis Australia Hot Shots logo

The Tennis Australia programs are made up of fun tennis activities which support skill acquisition and movement all whilst ‘playing the game’ in a meaningful way. Each of the programs facilitate active play and are inclusive of all abilities.

The aim of the programs are to support schools with sustainable health and physical education whilst also increasing the participation and activity levels of students.

PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Partnership program is the most suitable program for schools that are looking to deliver tennis within their curriculum during class times, focussing on skill acquisition and learning the technical elements of the game. Schools who commit to the sport through placing tennis in the Health and Physical Education curriculum for a minimum of four weeks throughout the school year will be treated as an official deliverer of ANZ Tennis Hot Shots and in turn will receive program benefits for this commitment.

The Play program is recommended for schools where the student’s skills are more developed and at the stage where they are ready to participate in structured competitions, events and matches. For schools who are already involved in the Partnership program, the Play program assists in transitioning students into ‘playing the game’ or competitive situations. Schools will be supported through the INtennisCITY platform which assists teachers in the setup and construction of events and matches.

The recommended pathway for schools is to start with the Partnership program and then transition through to the Play program.

SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Tennis for Secondary Schools Partnership program supports secondary schools to deliver on aspects of the student achievement standards for band 7 and 8 and band 9 and 10 as outlined in the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education (AC:HPE). The two strands, Personal Social and Community Health (PSCH) and Movement and Physical Activity (MPA) as embedded in the AC:HPE have also been addressed.

The program is focused on the promotion of lifelong physical activity and health by providing students with the opportunity to participate in tennis at school. Guided by a student-centred approach, with an emphasis on the holistic development of the student, each student’s developmental readiness has been considered. Tennis recognises that a student’s personal, social and emotional development, movement confidence and competence, connection to community as well as an ability to lead an active and healthy lifestyle are all contributing factors to their wellbeing.

Adopting the Game Sense Approach (GSA), the program is underpinned by four pillars, with each pillar represented by a specific tennis component.

1. Movement Concepts and Strategies – Playing the Game
2. Active and Healthy – Physical Activity, Fun and Fitness
3. Community – Tennis Sport Education
4. Personal, Social and Emotional- Promoting Personal and Social Competence

Schools who commit to the sport through placing tennis in their Health and Physical Education curriculum for a minimum of four weeks throughout the school year will receive a comprehensive delivery resource which is aligned to the Australian Curriculum Health and Physical Education (AC:HPE).
