Essentials for Schools

Tackers logoThe sailing product on offer through Sporting Schools is Tackers. Tackers is a learn to sail program that caters for children aged seven to 12 and is delivered at recognised Tackers centres. Kids don’t need to have any prior sailing experience as all equipment, including the boats, is provided.  


There are two levels of Tackers sailing programs available: 

  1. Tackers Intro
  2. Tackers 1

Program Brief Key Information
Sporting Schools Tackers Intro      Tackers Intro is specifically designed for the Sporting Schools program and provides an opportunity for students to get a taste of the wonderful world of sailing. With shorter sessions to Tackers 1, kids will get involved in a sailing treasure hunt, paddling race, wind awareness activities plus they learn about water safety! 
  • Four hours tuition from qualified Australian Sailing instructors funded through Sporting Schools
  • Combination of on and off water games
  • A personalised certificate recognising completion of the Sporting Schools Tackers Intro course
Sporting Schools Tackers 1 Tackers 1 (the first step of the ‘learn to sail’ pathway) teaches students the foundations of sailing in a kids-centric environment. The kids develop leadership skills and independence as they progressively learn to manoeuvre their boats in pairs through the activities set out by their qualified instructors.
  • 10 hours tuition delivered by qualified Australian Sailing instructors funded through Sporting Schools
  • Schools and/or parents can then choose to complete an additional 10 hours tuition delivered by qualified Australian Sailing instructors paid for by parents.
  • Combination of on and off water games
  • A nationally recognised Sporting Schools Tackers 1 certificate

Program Competencies

By the end of the program, the children will:

Have learned the basic sailing safety rules and procedures   ✓
Be able to launch and retrieve their own boat
Understand how the boat floats and what to do if water is taken on-board
Understand what the different roles are in the boat (skipper and crew)
Have participated in an array of sailing-based games 
Understand the freedom and responsibility sailing provides 
Have learned half of the tricks and techniques to sail using a fun and games based approach
Have an in-depth understanding of the different parts of the boat
Understand how wind affects the boat
Understand the tide and weather conditions
Be able to right their boat after a capsize
Have learned the fundamentals to sail their boat under supervision with a partner

  • Australian Sailing Dinghy Instructor qualification
  • Tackers Induction (Endorsement)
