Putting, chipping and driving skills were put to the test at St Richard’s Primary School when all of its 190 students took part in the MyGolf Sporting Schools programme.
Gardiners Run Golf Club that’s nearby to this primary school in Melbourne’s east, sent along their golf professional Aaron Cox to deliver this two week programme to give the students a taste of this skills-based sport all while having fun.
Running the sessions in school time over two days each week for two weeks, Aaron said the programme was a huge hit and was thrilled to be able to get the whole school to play the game of golf.
“The MyGolf Sporting Schools programme is great. It allows local club coaches to come to the school to introduce students to the skills of golf within a fun and inclusive environment,” he said.
“The design of the programme gives the students an opportunity to learn all the main swings in golf; putting, chipping and full swing within the first three sessions, then culminating with a small round of golf on a student-designed golf course within the school surrounds. The kids just love it.”
Golf Australia has been blown away with the level of uptake and positive feedback that has come back from schools running their MyGolf Sporting Schools programme.
Golf Australia’s National Schools Golf Coordinator Shaun Hickman said the success of the programme was multi-faceted.
“Our MyGolf Sporting Schools programme is fully flexible to ensure schools are able to run a variety of programmes to suit their needs,” he said.
“Schools also receive a modified MyGolf school equipment kit, coaching resources and a fully curriculum-aligned programme delivered by local professional golf coaches, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.”
Sporting Schools is a $100 million Australian Government initiative to get more children playing more sport, before, during and after school. Want to run a Golf programme at your school? Check out all the details on the Golf Australia page.
