Three new teams from Goodwood Primary School have debuted this season in the Northern Suburbs Junior Soccer Association (NSJSA) as a result of a collaborative approach taken by teachers, parents, Football Federation Tasmania (FFT) and NSJSA.
Students at the school had some initial exposure to the small-games fun of MiniRoos as part of the Australian Government-funded Sporting Schools program, and Advanced Skills Teacher Hugo Luttmer picked up on the increasing level of interest in football in the playground at lunchtime.
“Ben and Ellie from FFT came to Goodwood to deliver a Sporting Schools program. Following on from that, Ben suggested that we should consider entering a team in the local (NSJSA) roster.”
“There was a reasonable level of excitement and enthusiasm from both students and parents. Ben and Ellie continued to support us and helped parents with no previous coaching experience become coaches. To assist the signing up and registering process, Michele from FFT attended training two weeks in a row and completed the online registrations for our players. In our first year we have teams in the under 6, 9 and 10 rosters.”
The school, the association and FFT all chipped in to assist with the purchase of equipment including balls, bibs, pop-up goals and shin pads. Follow up support was provided by FFT to assist the parents who had volunteered to coach the teams, including ALDI MiniRoos coaching resources outlining fun activities to run during training sessions.
“Ben, Ellie and Michele from FFT have made the whole process very easy from start to finish. Our students are proud to be able to play for their school and look forward to their Saturday mornings.”
Sporting Schools is a $200 million Australian Government initiative to get more children playing more sport, before, during and after school. Want to run a soccer program? Check out all the details on the Football Federation Australia page.
